My Broken BoatOutboard Help

Why won't my outboard pull-start cord work?

Pull-start (recoil) problems · Symptom: Rope won't retract, won't pull, or slips.

Quick answer: Most often: not in neutral (start-in-gear lockout), rope won't retract: rewind spring slipped from slot, weak, or broken, starter housing bolt over-tightened after reinstall. Start here: Shift to neutral and retry. If that doesn't fix it, work through the checks below, and see a marine mechanic if you're unsure.

Likely causes (most to least common)

  1. Not in neutral (start-in-gear lockout)
  2. Rope won't retract: rewind spring slipped from slot, weak, or broken
  3. Starter housing bolt over-tightened after reinstall
  4. Frayed rope / worn pulley edges
  5. Worn starter pawl (rope pulls but doesn't turn engine)
  6. Won't pull at all: hydrolock or seized engine (serious)

Safe owner checks & fixes

  1. Shift to neutral and retry.
  2. Rope partly retracting after work on the motor: forum techs suggest first slightly loosening the starter mounting bolt you reinstalled.
  3. Replace a frayed rope before it breaks; length is model-specific — check manual/parts listing.
  4. Spring replacement: the rewind spring is under strong tension — wear safety glasses (BRP service manual) and use the service manual, or have a mechanic do it.
  5. Rope won't pull: do not force; remove plugs only if you know how and check for water; otherwise mechanic.

Parts / tools

Recoil rope, screwdrivers, safety glasses, replacement spring or used starter assembly (model-specific).

Call a marine mechanic when

Rewind spring needs replacing and you have no service manual or safety glasses; engine won't turn over at all (possible hydrolock/seizure — don't force). If you're on the water and unsafe, call TowBoatUS/Sea Tow or the Coast Guard (VHF 16).
