Why won't my primer bulb firm up?
Primer bulb soft / won't firm up · Symptom: Bulb stays squishy or collapses.
Quick answer: Most often: air leak: loose connector or bad O-ring at quick-connect, failed check valves in bulb (installed backwards or worn), cracked hose or bulb. Start here: Bulb arrow points toward engine. If that doesn't fix it, work through the checks below, and see a marine mechanic if you're unsure.
Likely causes (most to least common)
- Air leak: loose connector or bad O-ring at quick-connect
- Failed check valves in bulb (installed backwards or worn)
- Cracked hose or bulb
- Empty tank / pickup out of fuel
- Collapsed bulb = clogged vent or pickup
Safe owner checks & fixes
- Bulb arrow points toward engine.
- Reseat fittings; inspect O-rings.
- Collapsing bulb: open tank vent.
- Replace bulb/line if cracked or won't hold.
- Fuel dripping at fittings: fix before running.
Parts / tools
Primer bulb kit (correct hose size), stainless clamps, O-rings.
Call a marine mechanic when
Leak at the engine-side fitting or fuel pump; bulb new and correctly fitted but still won't firm (suspect pickup or anti-siphon valve in tank). If you're on the water and unsafe, call TowBoatUS/Sea Tow or the Coast Guard (VHF 16).
