Why is there no tell-tale (pee) stream from my outboard?
No or weak tell-tale (pee) stream · Symptom: Little or no water from the indicator outlet.
Quick answer: Most often: telltale outlet plugged by debris/insects/salt, lower-unit water intake screens blocked (weeds, mud, bag), worn/failed water pump impeller. Start here: Shut engine off promptly if alarm or no stream. If that doesn't fix it, work through the checks below, and see a marine mechanic if you're unsure.
Likely causes (most to least common)
- Telltale outlet plugged by debris/insects/salt
- Lower-unit water intake screens blocked (weeds, mud, bag)
- Worn/failed water pump impeller
- Thermostat stuck
- Internal passage blockage
Safe owner checks & fixes
- Shut engine off promptly if alarm or no stream.
- Poke the telltale outlet with a wire/small zip-tie; restart and watch.
- Tilt up and clear intake screens.
- If stream stays weak/absent: stop running; impeller replacement is moderate DIY with a service manual, otherwise mechanic.
Parts / tools
Stiff wire or zip-tie, flushing attachment, impeller kit (model-specific).
Call a marine mechanic when
Clearing outlet and intakes doesn't restore a strong stream — impeller/pump job if you lack a service manual or tools; steam or spurting from telltale. If you're on the water and unsafe, call TowBoatUS/Sea Tow or the Coast Guard (VHF 16).
